Kathmandu only has 5 fire engines after getting a new fire engine donated by the UK government and the number of fire fighters is less than 100. Lalitpur fire brigade does not have any working fire trucks since the past 14 months. Bhaktapur only has 1 working fire engine. Likewise, one fire brigade of Lahan municipality has been inoperable after locals of Jaljale, Udayapur, vandalised it. Sagarmatha Zone’s Triyuga municipality does not have even a single fire brigade. The only fire douser of Inaruwa Municipality has also been damaged. Siraha witnesses most of the fire incidents but the district does not even have a single fire extinguisher. One fire extinguisher belonging to Siraha municipality has been dysfunctional and has been stored in the garage. Saptari, another district frequently affected by fire causalities, has only one fire extinguisher. Koshi Zone’s Biratnagar sub-municipality’s three out of four fire engines are in operation. However, there is not a single fire engine in Dhankuta and Khandbari. There is one fire engine each in Ilam and Damak municipals and two each in Mechinagar and Bhadrapur, but only two are in operation.
